I went to go see CATS August 20th, 2000 at the Winter Garden Theatre and I thought that it was probably the most amazing show I had ever seen! No movie I had seen could even compare to it. I became accquainted with CATS when PBS showed the video on its channel. It prompted me to go see CATS, although I didn't get a chance until the summer of this year. Unfortunately, it was the first and last time I ever got to see this great performance. Being inside the theatre made me feel like I was truly in the junkyard with the Jellicles;l like I was a part of there world. I never expected it when the cats came from the backstage into the audience, then all of a sudden you turn around and see these glowing green eyes coming from you in the dark. Everything was a surprise, as if it were new- including the Rumpuscat jumping out, and Macavity being found out by Demeter, etc.. It was like I didn't know what to expect anymore. I had to admit, the Rum Tum Tugger's voice was quite annoying, but the actor was superb! He added all of the comic releif and made everyone in the theatre laugh! Julius Sermonia, who played Mistoffelees at my performance was the most incredible dancer I had ever witnessed. The audience roared with applause at his smallest dance move, because even that was worthy of a standing ovation. My family and I cannot get over how truly talented this man is. The woman who played Cassandra was greatly talented as well- at times you could have sworn that she was a Siamese Cat! I finally got to see Growltiger's Last Stand, which was taken out of the video, and that was a pleasant surprise. I was also totally amazed at the end when Old Deuteronomy lifts the tire with Grizabella to the Heavyside Layer. It loomed over you like it was truly floating, and it gave me a sense of awe and wonder I've never felt before! CATS is everything I expected it to be- touching, cute, funny and the dancing was beyond amazing! But once the play ended and we exited the Winter Garden Theatre and got back into the sunlight, I looked back at the theatre, and the whole play suddenly seemed like a dream to me...It was so enchanting in there that when we left the Junkyard of the Jellicles, seeing CATS was no more than a memory. And now that CATS is closing, it makes me sad to know that I never was able to see it before in earlier years. I hope that one day it will become a musical revival and once again grace the stages of Broadway, and I will be able to see this wonderful play once again in my life. -Sarii
