Munkustrap is, in my personal opinion, the most important character 
in the play CATS. He is a large black and gray tabby and is mostly in 
a prominent position on the stage.

Most of the time one sees Munkustrap, he is doing the singing and 
storytelling of the play. Not only does he tell the story, he also 
protects the other Jellicles whenever danger is present, such as when 
Macavity shows up. For instance, when Macavity cat-naps Old 
Deuteronomy (the Jellicle leader) Munkustrap fights Macavity to 
protect the others and gets wounded in the fight. This just proves 
that he loves the Jellicles very much. In the London productions and 
in the video, there seems to be one Jellicle that he loves more than 
the others and that is Demeter. You could even say that she is his 
mate. Munkustrap shows definite leadership abilities, and it is no 
doubt that when Old Deuteronomy needs to pass on the duties of 
Jellicle Leader, he will pass them to Munkustrap. For this reason, 
Munkustrap will probably not be chosen to journey to the Heaviside 
Layer. He is needed by the tribe.
