Munkustrap is Old Deuteronomy's grandson and the one who will take 
over the leadership when the old cat passes away, but Munkustrap has 
a long way to go before that happens.  At the moment, he is still 
quite young and inexperienced.  Even so, Munkustrap is still known as 
the leader of the Jellicles. Whenever Old Deuteronomy is not there, 
he's in charge.  As well as this, Munkustrap is also a devoted 
protector of the Junkyard and can always be relied on should anything 
go wrong.  He is constantly on the alert for danger and may not join 
in the fun if something is bothering him.

A strikingly handsome, silver tabby, Munkustrap is much loved by 
nearly all the Jelllicles, especially the kittens.  Kind, caring and 
understanding, it's no wonder.  He is quite serious and can be a bit 
bossy at times (aren't all leaders?), so the others are always trying 
to get him to cheer up.  As well as being kind, he can also be very 
fierce, especially when it comes to facing fiends like Macavity (his 
worst enemy).  He has a permanent fiercesome look in his features, so 
that he can be pretty frightening when he wants to be, particularly 
when he is angry, which isn't all that often.  He is also very brave, 
fearless, quite strong and naturally a great fighter.  He is the kind 
of cat who cares about anyone but himself.  In fact, he would 
probably defend his tribe to the death if need be.
   
Munkustrap is very close friends with Bombalurina and Demeter.  They 
have probably known each other from kittenhood and I think that he 
and Demi might be more than just close friends!  But it's hard to 
tell.  He is also good friends with Jennyanydots.  In fact, I think 
she might be his aunt. (Some people claim that Grizabella is his 
mother and I'm inclined to agree, but it's a matter of opinion).  He 
usually hangs around with Skimbleshanks or George, but is rather 
solitary and you'll mostly find him sitting on his own (aww!). 
Consequently, there are a number of cats who he doesn't really get on 
with.  Pouncival (who is the one causing trouble throughout the 
Jellicle Ball) and The Rum Tum Tugger get on his nerves and he finds 
Mungojerry untrustworthy as well as a pain, but the one who annoys 
him the most is The Great Rumpus Cat.  Munkustrap finds this black 
cat with eyes like fireballs ugly, hairy, unpredictable and as thick 
as two short planks.  They are always irritating each other, 
Munkustrap insulting Rumpus, 'without really meaning to', and being 
careful not to get hit in the face, while Rumpus pranks around, 
scaring the other Jellicles, getting in the way and basically winding 
Munkustrap up the wrong way.
