One of my favourites (along with the Tugger and Jellylorum and Munkustrap and so many others)! I think Mistoffelees is the son of Bustopher Jones, for they are very much alike and, all during the song of Bustopher, Mistoffelees stands right by his side and is looks the happiest when the gourmet looks at him. Fortunately for his dance and his magic, heīs smaller and slimmer than his father! Thereīs something strange going on between Mistoffelees and Rum Tum Tugger. I agree with Dragonfly in that Misto isn't shy at all, as the Tugger says, for heīs always on the first row and dances and sings like the best. But I have noticed some details from his own song: every time that the Tugger says he (Misto, not himself) is a "phenomenal cat", Misto looks at him as if saying: "Hey, stop it, thatīs enough", even knowing that Tugger is sencere. And afterwards, just before taking away the cloth that covers Old Deuteronomy, Mistoffelees glances at Tugger, like taking courage, like asking: "Do you think I can do it?" and Tugger glances back as if answering: "Go ahead, we trust you, I know you can do it" (the power of the eyes and looks is so strong in Cats...) Mr. Mistoffelees is still a kitten, and, despite his magical powers and his excellent dance and his beautiful voice (I love him when he sings "Jellicle cats come out tonight..." and when he says "Presto!") he needs the friendship of someone older - like the Tugger. The Tugger encourages and protects Mistoffelees, and Mistoffelees helps the Tugger to get his feet back on the ground (something that the Tugger really needs...when Misto says "The Rum Tum Tugger is a terrible bore", the Tugger gives him a quick, hurt look - but thatīs what friends are for!) In spite of all little differences, I'm sure that they do love each other...When Old Deuteronomy is back, the Tugger keeps shouting once and once again how wonderful Mistoffelees is. Who says that the Tugger only cares for himself? It seems that Mistoffelees fancies Victoria (he is who stares at her while sheīs dancing alone after "The naming of a cat", isnīt he?), and he is seen near her many times. The first time I saw the musical I was sorry for him, because I thought that Victoria liked Plato best. Or Alonzo? Sorry, I donīt know exactly which cat is the one who caresses her in the Jellicle ball, and afterwards, just between the fight with Macavity and the song "Mr.Mistoffelees", meets her in the shadows. I mean I thought she finally refused Misto, but later I noticed that they were toghether when Grizabella goes to the Heavyside Layer, sharing such intense a moment. Could it mean the final decision of Victoriaīs? Mistoffelees himself is wonderful, a young cat which astonishing magical powers full of energy and will to live. Not as strong as Munkustrap or Bombalurina, not such a show- off as Rum Tum Tugger, not as cunning as Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer - but lively and friendly as them all. Really one of my beloved ones! by I - kun
