I think Old Deuteronomy was Grizabella's father. She
was his favorite child, and he watched her grow and
eventually leave the jellicle community to pursue her
own dreams. The outside world was hard on her, and
she wants more than anything to be accepted back into
the community. Old Deuteronomy feels sorry for her
and is saddened to see the way the other cats shun
her, which is why he gives her eternal life in the
end.
